OBJECTIVES AND SELF APPRAISAL
Electronics and Communication Engineering is the last of the conventional streams of engineering which has assisted in the evolution of modern engineering branches like CSE and IT. In many ways it is bridge between generations of engineering, thereby giving a facelift to other branches in the form of mechatronics, embedded systems, nanotechnology and the like.
From its humble beginnings within the confines of electrical engineering, it has come a long way, and has carved a niche for itself. Its initial definition in terms of low power devices has now been rendered meaningless by recent developments in power electronics. The hardware components of computers are electronic circuits integrated into tiny chips, thanks to VLSI technology. Progress in digital circuit design techniques has pioneered the growth of consumer electronics in a big way. Miniature high speed high performance PC’s, flat screen T.V and mobile phones are available at affordable prices thanks to intense research taking place in the sector by market leaders. Electronic devices have an all pervasive presence today, integrating seamlessly into our daily lives.
The advent of internet and satellite communication has created a quantum leap in connectivity. The world has shrunk dramatically, thanks to faster and more effective communication techniques. The speed of travel has reached the speed of thought, virtual reality nearly replacing physical presence. Optical fiber cables can today provide the last corner of the globe with high speed access to the digital thoroughfare. This is being powered by communication engineers with rapid advancements in digital modulation techniques. The possibilities are immense with man-machine interfaces like mobile phones, GPS, laptops, Wi-fi, large capacity storage gadgets and so on becoming smaller, faster and cheaper. Further device integration is being brought about by smaller chip sizes, and sharing of common resources.
