It was in the year 1980 that the Department of Chemical Engineering was started in TKM College of Engineering. It is an eight semester regular course. Forty students are admitted to the course every year and out of which 85% are through the Entrance examination conducted by Govt. of Kerala.and 15% by the Management strictly on the rules and regulations stipulated by the Govt. A common syllabus for all B.Tech courses is taught during the first two semesters combined. During higher semesters eight different elective subjects in various interdisciplinary areas are offered in order to help students to choose new vistas in industrial, academic and management professions. The department provides the students ample opertunities to interact with State-of-the art technologists, representatives of indusries and academia and R&D organisations such as those of KMML, VSSC, Cochin Refinaries, RRL, Hidustan Latex and Binani Zinc. During summer vacation, the students are given short term in-plant training in these organisations. Students gain sound exposure to industrial environment through projects performed under the joined guidance and supervision of the faculty and industrial experts.
The department maintains a high academic standard and the department have highly qualified faculty and many of them have doctoral degree.
The department has an approved Student Chapter of the Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers. The Regional chapter of IICh.E helps to arrange seminars, Industrial visits and workshops for students. The Chemical Engineering Students Association take initiative in organising Co-curricular and Extra-curricular activities. The KRL-TKM-ENCON-CLUB of the Departement organises Energy-Environment awareness programmes.

at all QIP centres of the

by presenting technical papers
based on their research work and projects.
The students graduated from this department are occupying
key positions in
internationally reputed organizations throughout the
world. Most of the members of the alumni chapters functioning
at various parts of the world like Bangalore, Cochin,Trivandrum,
Chennai, Dubai, Quatar, Muscat, Saudi Arabia, USA and
UK are from this Department.
Summary of major developments and progress achieved
during the last five years
Performance of the department has been uniformly
good. Summary of the results, placements through the Training
and Placement cell shows steady progress. New machines
and computers with latest software are attached to the
various labs. Amenities like Seminar room with OHP, LCD Projector and
other modern facilities have been added. A seperate block is provided exclusively for the Department.
